In Episode 20 of The Safeti Podcast, we catch up with Andrea Baker, the HOP Mentor!
If you've never heard of the terms Human and Organizational Performance, or HOP, or the New View, or Safety Differently, you've come the right place!
In short, HOP is an industrial operating philosophy that recognizes safety (and quality) as an emergent property of the larger system. Good performance is not the absence of errors (human error is inevitable), it's the presence of defenses (Conklin).
To embrace this philosophy, Andrea believes the profession needs a paradigm shift in thought. To be more precise, we need to move away from looking for fault in our people, and towards looking for weaknesses in our system; to "become less surprised by error, and more interested in learning"- Edwards.
As there is plenty to absorb during this session, we've split into two so that you can listen, digest and apply some of the thoughts to your own context before we go on to the second session.
